Mas Tortó

Tasting note:

Medium satured red; dark berry fruit flavours; light roasted aromas of plums, currant; some toasty coffee flavours;  lots of red and dark berry flavours in taste; complex but fine; very sofisticated style; intense seroius fruit caracter; powerful but elegant; serious sweet tannins; complex and mineral; nice freshness and very good length

Food pairing: 

Roasted lamb chops, goat, beef, duck, game (partridge, quail, rabbit); stews, casseroles, grilled vegetable, cheeses, Sirloin, oxtrail

Grape varieties: 

70% old vines Garnacha
- 40% Garnacha del Pais (catalan, indigenous Klon)
- 35% Garnacha Peluda („hairy“ leaves; imported from Southern France after   Phylloxera
10% Merlot
10% Syrah
10% Cabernet Sauvignon

temperature controlled fermentation (27-29ºC; indegenous yeast)
varieties were vinified partly separately, partly blended in stainless steel tanks adn open barrels
mazeration: 18-30 days
malo-lactic fermentation started in tank and finished in barrel
not cold stabilized, light filtration
no finning

14 month aged in new and one year old mainly french oak barrels (228l); Allier and Never; light and medium toasted; 1 racking
after blending aged for 3 months in tank before bottling

small plots of old Garnacha vines (70 years old
Cabernet Sauvignon: 25 years ols; Merlot: 15 years old; Syrah 6-15 years old – all three from por mineral low yielding „slate soil“
Low yield: green harvest
terroir: clay, granit; very mineral; several plots of slate
slopes and terrases
altitude: 200-550m
prunning: Garnacha: traditional bush vines; the others on „wire“
