The 4th vintage of Vimblanc from Celler de Capçanes, also known as 4vb, has been named the “Wine of the Month” by the prestigious journalist Thomas Götz.
Thomas Götz is a journalist, wine writer, and educator and advocate for Spanish wines. In addition to his professional blog, Götz collaborates with magazines such as Wein+Markt, Falstaff, and Weinkenner, as well as with ICEX-Magazine, Vinos Vinos y Foods & Wines from Spain, and the MiVino magazine.
In his November newsletter, the author particularly highlights the VimBlanc (4vb) from the 2014 vintage, describing it as the most fascinating and outstanding.
This Blanc de Noirs wine is made from red Garnacha grapes from very old vines, ranging from 65 to 95 years old. What truly makes it unique is its seven-year aging process, which combines biological aging with the flor veil and oxidative aging. This technique is based on the local tradition of storing wines in barrels in the 1980s and bottling them in small quantities in amphorae to prevent excessive oxidation.
The wine undergoes a specific process where a portion of the wine is removed from the barrel in early summer to allow the growth of flor yeast on the surface, acting as a barrier against oxidation during the winter months. This process is repeated for seven years.
The author highlights the uniqueness of this production method and compares it to an Amontillado for its dry and aromatic profile. However, he emphasizes that the VimBlanc maintains its own personality with more acidity, a citrus touch, and less intensity. He concludes by stating that the 2014 vintage is exceptional, with remarkable finesse, precision, and elegance, becoming one of his favorites of the year.
